In July 2023 I bought my first new camera in 17 years, a Canon R5 with a 100-500 mm zoom. I also bought a monopod. It’s a mirror-less camera, so the viewfinder is the exact image being detected by the sensor. It has approx. 45 million pixels, and can take pictures at 1/8000th of a second, and 20 per second. I’ve told people my job is simply to get between this miracle of engineering and the subject.

Then in January 2024 I had a trip planned to Bonaire. I love to snorkel but the underwater system for the Canon was too pricey and I also didn’t want to risk ruining it, so after some research I bought an OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7 underwater point-and-shoot. It has multiple underwater settings and as I learned the basics it got easier to use the pictures got better. No surprise that the most important thing is proximity to the subject, which can be a challenge underwater.
